OAHPERD 2012: Vision and Strategy

Overview:

The Ohio Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (hereinafter known as OAHPERD) is committed to the well-being of people in Ohio.  The Association represents over 3,000 professional educators in the State of Ohio promoting healthy, active lifestyles and lifelong learning through opportunities for professional leadership and development, service, and advocacy.  OAHPERD works collaboratively with the Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio Department of Health, the Office of the Governor and the Ohio Legislature to improve the quality and quantity of wellness education in Ohio schools.

Association history dates back to 1895 and is credited as the first state association recognized by the American Association for the Advancement of Physical Education.  Membership of OAHPERD includes professional educators in Pre-K through higher education.

The Association is led by a 28-member Board of Trustees and its current President, Alvin Stephens.

OAHPERD has an extensive division and sectional structure each led by a Vice President, including:

·         Health Division

·         Higher Education Division

·         Physical Education Division

·         Recreation Division

·         Sports Science Division

·         Dance Division

·         General Division

·         Student Division

The Association also has an extensive committee structure and well-defined set of officers and functional roles all documented in a set of operating codes (position descriptions). OAHPERD seeks to review and develop its long-term strategic plan and its leadership structure to assure alignment of the leadership structure with the strategic plan creating a strong voice for education and advocacy in the State of Ohio for well-being through health, physical education, recreation and dance education.

Strategic Leadership Associates (hereinafter known as SLA) is assisting OAHPERD through a consultation process to develop its 5-year strategic plan and to review its leadership structure, including:

·         Task 1 – Vision and Strategy Development

·         Task 2 – Leadership Structure Development

·         Task 3 – Strategic Action Plan Development

On February 23-24, 2008, members of the Board participated in a strategic planning retreat to develop the top level vision and strategy for OAHPERD for the next five years.  Between March and May 2008, Trustees reviewed the vision and strategy for desired changes.  The final discussion draft was revised by the Board of Directors on June 7, 2008.  A final review was conducted with the Board of Directors on October 17, 2008.  The Final Draft was adopted by the OAHPERD Representative Assembly on December 3, 2008 and will serve to guide the work towards completing Task 2 and Task 3 throughout 2009.
